Action Alert )

Enterprise Park at Calverton NY (EPACL)

Please read the discription of a major development proposal being planned for the Calverton site in Riverhead. This proposed development will have a major impact on our community. To accomodate the traffic which is expected to be generated, the DOT is planning to widen Middle Country Rd. to CR 21. Obviously this will have a major impact on our subcenter planned for Artist Lake and the Middle Island Center. We need to take action. Please read the description below sent to us from Alan Stadler of Ridge. Than write and send e-mail to our state reps. Senator Ken LaValle and Assemblywoman Acampora. We also need to contact Riverhead Town and express our concern. Ask them to rezone the amusement park areas to high tech industrial. Ask them to fight for an alternative access to the LIE. Please act ASAP and send this message on to your neighbors and friends. Thanks Connie

Message from Alan: EPCAL is being constructed next to the Brookhaven eastern Town line. A major amusement park and sports stadium(s) are planned for the ³amusement² zone(s) at EPCAL, industrial compounds, and major ³high rise² hotels are also planned. In excess of ninety percent of vehicular traffic will arrive to a completed EPCAL from the west and depart a completed EPCAL (back) towards the west. A direct North-South thoroughfare (cut-out) from EPCAL to I-495 (LIE) is NOT planned to carry the egregious day and nighttime traffic along with the accompanying pollutions. NY-25 (Middle Country Road, west of EPCAL) through the environmentally sensitive and residential areas of Brookhaven Town will be the primary route in and out of EPCAL.]

NYS DOT has already determined that NY-25 (Middle Country Rd) must (will) be widened from Calverton to SC-21 (Rocky Point Rd prior to the completion of EPCAL. This is public info that has been validated within the Riverhead Master plan that can be reviewed at the Town of Riverhead website

All the open space south of EPCAL to the LIE is Pine Barrens Core. The NYS DEC has been on record stating that they will never allow any construction of any kind (thoroughfare from LIE directly to EPCAL) through that area. Because of this K. LaValle, Acampora, TOB, Town of Riverhead and anyone who listens should be contacted. Riverhead is sympathetic to this issue and does desire direct EPCAL access to the LIE for many practical and business reasons. Riverhead would consider land swaps to gain right of way. However, the NYS DEC will not consider it.

Supervisor Cardinale and the TOR Board are reasonable and stated that they would be interested in changing (rezone) the inappropriate amusement area zoning ONLY if the public petitions the Board to do so preferably prior to the February TOR Board meeting. The majority of ³Riverheader's² and ²Brookhavenite's² do strongly agree with that principle. A mass mailing should be coordinated to the Town of Riverhead Board ASAP requesting them to rezone EPCAL to rid our communities of an undesirable amusement park, major league sports stadium(s) and possible auto raceways. If not it will be too late and a done deal. Riverhead acknowledges that more industry such as high tech would be a sensible alternative to the present entertainment initiatives. Almost all who attended the session were extremely agreeable and supportive with our agenda.
